The Masters Preview and Picks

The wait is over. 7 months after its originally scheduled date we are here. It’s Masters week. The tournament will have a much different look and feel this year. Colder weather, no Bermuda grass, darkness creeping in early, and no gigantic galleries, are just a few of the oddities we will see in this pandemic playing of golf’s greatest Major. With the different conditions, this tournament will heavily favor tee to green players, and guys who have a good second shot in particular. No galleries means maybe we get a long shot young gun winner who doesn’t have to handle the pressure of fans. Nine of the last ten winners have been at least 16/1 odds with the exception of Spieth in 2015 who was 10/1. In fact, over the last ten years the average odds of the Masters winner is an astounding 40/1. Pair that with 13 of the last 18 Major winners being first time winners, and I think we are in for an exciting week.

The Picks

Top 20

Lee Westwood (+225) is making his return to Augusta for the first time since 2017 when he finished T18. He makes my card this week based on what he has done here in the past. He always seems to play well at Augusta finishing top 20 in 8 of his last 10 tournaments, and 5 of those were top 10s. He is one of the older guys in the field at 47, but proved at the US open that he can still hang with the young guys with a T13 finish.

Lanto Griffin (+400) comes into the tournament in good form. In his last three tournaments he has T7 and T11. He is 49th on tour in strokes gained approaching the green. That is not a staggering number but should be good enough with how he has been playing the last few tournaments. His form along with +400 odds for top 20 makes this one a no brainer for me.

Top 10

Tony Finau (+225) always seems to make my card because the numbers all make sense. Then he loses me money. So this tournament I will back off and just take him top 10. He is 23rd on tour in approach (my most important stat for this week), and 18th on tour in driving distance (the course is rumored to be playing long). His Major track record is unbelievable with 8 top tens in 18 tournaments. He has only played in the masters twice earning a 5th and 10th place finish. One of these days he is going to win a Major. It may be this year. But I’m sticking with top 10.

Scottie Scheffler (+400) is one of the up and coming stars on tour. He won rookie of the year in 2020 (yes this Masters is actually last seasons). This will be only his second Major as a pro, the first was T4 at the US open earlier this year. He is 10th on tour in stokes gained off the tee which will be big if the course is playing long. He is also 33rd in strokes gained approach the green which we know will be important. The moment wont be too big for him and I expect him to compete.

Winner/ Top 5

Xander Schauffele (+1600) is another guy who frequents my card and hasn’t yet come through with a win. Tony Finau has very impressive numbers in Majors without a win, but somehow Schauffele’s numbers are better. Half of the Majors he’s played in he’s finished top 10, a third of them he has top 5 including last years Masters where he finished 2nd. 7th on tour in strokes gained tee to green, 3 in total strokes gained and 5th in scoring average should all add u to his first Major victory.

Patrick Cantlay (+2800) comes in winning the last tournament he played. He has two top 10s in his last three events and is playing with a ton of confidence. He finished T9 in his only Masters played last year. He is 12th on tour in strokes gained tee to green, and 14th in putting average (everyone knows how tough putting at Augusta is). If Xander can’t pull out the victory I think that he will be there to take it, and should finish top 5 regardless.

Fade

Bryson DeChambeau is the favorite to win and has been playing really well. That’s why I like the fade. As I stated previously, the favorites don’t win this tournament. 40/1 is the average for a winner over the last ten years. To put that in perspective; the guys at 40/1 this year are Matthew Wolff and Webb Simpson. Maybe the biggest reason why I like the fade is that Augusta does not allow you to use a greens book. Bryson is notorious for his weird scientific methods and note taking. He will be without that this week, and I believe it will affect him mentally.

Patrick Reed has a Green Jacket to his name. That is about the only time he has played well at this course. He has never finished inside the top 20 aside from that one victory. I have seen a lot of people placing bets on him this week because of that one victory, I’m doing the opposite. The exception is the win, the norm is a bad tournament. +

MJ and Denny Hamlin to start NASCAR team

Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin are teaming to star their own NASCAR team. The one driver team will be aligned with Joe Gibbs Racing who Hamlin currently drives for. Hamlin has been dominant this year winning 6 races, and is one of the favorites to bring home the championship. Jordan who also owns the Charlotte Hornets became friends with Hamlin in 2009 when Hamlin attended a Bobcats game. Hamlin was signed by Nike’s Jordan brand two years later. Jordan a lifelong NASCAR fan has been seen at multiple events to cheer on Hamlin, and the two have finally decided to team up.

The team announced that their solo driver would be Bubba Wallace. Wallace became a household name earlier this season when a noose was found in his garage. It was later determined that the noose had been there at least 8 months prior. Wallace currently drives for Richard Petty Motorsports announced earlier this year that he would be leaving the team at the end of the season.

Wallace will now go from driving for one of the greatest drivers in history to one of the greatest athletes all time, and one of the best drivers in the Cup Series. My only hope is that he gets to drive the #23 car with some type of black and red paints scheme.

US Open Preview and Picks

The US Open is finally upon us. Originally scheduled in June we’ve had to wait a long three months for the event to finally take place. Rumor has it they haven’t cut the rough in those three months (no not really.) Winged Foot will however play extremely difficult if you cannot stay in the short grass. John Rahm was quoted earlier in the week “I don’t see any of us shooting under par. Or if we shoot under par, it would be someone winning by a lot”. That’s what we have instore for us this week. They are calling it “your fathers US open,” the last time the US Open was played at Winged Foot in 2006, Geoff Ogilvy captured the US Open trophy with a final score of +5. It’s going to take a mentally tough true grinder to pull out a win this week, and I for one cannot wait to feel better about my golf game as I watch all these guys struggle.

The Picks

Top 20

Harris English (+275). As I stated earlier, being mentally tough and avoiding a complete implosion will be key this weekend with the playing conditions. English is one of the best players in the world when it comes to digging himself out of trouble. 6th on tour in scrambling and 9th on scrambling from the rough. He has finished outside the top 23 just once in his last 9 tournaments and outside the top 20 twice. He’s in good form and has the ability to get himself out of trouble. +275 is a good number for a guy with those attributes.

Top 10

Tommy Fleetwood (+350). There might not be a guy who likes playing in the northeast more than Tommy Fleetwood. When he came back stateside after the break, he spent his quarantine on Long Island brushing up his game at Shinnecock. The same course in which he shot an astounded -7 on Sunday of the 2018 US open to finish one shot off the lead. There is something about Majors that seems to bring this guys game to the next level. With a second at the open championship last year to go with his runner up finish in 2018 I like him for a top 10 this week. I would consider taking him to win if he didn’t play overseas last week, and may have some jet lag/rust in the early rounds. He’s a candidate to place a wager on mid tournament if his game looks sharp early.

Top 5/Winner

Tony Finau (Top 5 +650, Winner +4000). I’ve been burned by Finau in the past, but he is just too good to lose faith in him. 11th on tour in tee to green makes me believe he should stay out of trouble. When he does get in trouble he is 51st in scrambling (no not a great number but good enough if he limits mistakes). Having placed top 5 in all 4 of the Major tournaments (Masters 2019, PGA 2020, US Open 2018, Open 2019) in his career the pressure clearly doesn’t get to him. The resume is too good to pass up the talent at +4000.

Xander Schauffele (Top 5 +350, Winner +1500) This guy loves Majors. Much like Finau he has success at all 4 events without capturing a victory. He has played in 12 Majors in his career and has accumulated 6 top tens and 4 top 5s. His favorite out of those tournaments? The US Open where he has finished no worse than 6th in his short career (3 tournaments). The US Open is traditionally a very difficult setup. When you look at his numbers it’s easy to see why he has success. 7th on tour tee to green and 2nd in scrambling. It’s hard to beat a guy who doesn’t get in trouble, and can get out of it when he’s there. Last time out he won the 72 score at the Tour championship and I think he keeps rolling this week and finally gets that illusive Major.
